How can therapy help?

One of the hardest jobs we will ever do is to be a parent. Our ability to feel effective in this role is often impacted by the things that life throws at us.

Having an understanding of why a child or young person might behave the way they do, gaining increased knowledge of child development, the impact of trauma and the neuroscience that explains some of the behaviours will help you as a parent to gain confidence in your parenting.

A key part of the work may be to understand your own triggers when managing the more challenging behaviours.

We have had sessions with Carol and our daughter with Emma and found both of them to be extremely professional, friendly and supportive of us as individuals, a couple and a family. The contact we have had with Carol and Emma has been such a positive experience and we cannot praise Carol, Emma and Jigsaw enough. Thanks.

Make sessions work for you and your family

Each therapist at Jigsaw is open to include sessions with you as the parent or carer to support your understanding of your child..

These sessions can take on the form of individual coaching sessions which can be arranged as required. We might suggest this support in conjunction with your child being in therapy or they can be arranged as a separate intervention or programme.

Filial Play Coaching may also be a beneficial intervention to consider and would involve you working closely with your child on your relationship and attachment.

It might be that you feel your own therapy or counselling would be beneficial and we are happy to support you through this process too.

Indicate what you would like to discuss on the enquiry form, and we will guide you through the next steps.

Parent/ Carer Counselling and Psychotherapy

To ensure that we are not working with the child or young person in isolation we have developed a Counselling and Psychotherapy programme which parents and carers can access either independently of their childs therapy or to run alongside. We have found this to be a highly effective way to support families and this can enhance the progress made by the child or young person in therapy too.

We have therapists and counsellors on our team who can discuss this process with you. The sessions can be offered face to face in one of our designated spaces or via Zoom.

Video Interaction Guidance

We have therapists on our team who could offer Video Interaction Guidance. This way of working involves interactions between a parent or carer and their child being video recorded during the session. The trained practitioner 'guider' would then spend time looking through the clips with the parent and offering feedback. The aim of this way of working is to enhance communication within relationships. The therapist. will help the parent to reflect on the video clips and use this feedback to grow more confident as a parent. These sessions can be facilitated. in the childs home or within a school or other setting.

Parent and Carer Coaching Programme

"I really enjoyed the Chemistry of Parenting course with Kate and Mic. It was unlike anything I have done before, or read about...there were many useful takeaways and I hope they will help all of our family."

Parenting can be tough whatever stage and age of children you may have or are looking after. We have trained therapists on our team who have designed and can offer a bespoke 7 week experience, working together either in person, in a group or online via zoom for an hour a week. The course offers a friendly space to chat about your family and the challenges you might be experiencing. Each week builds on your existing experience and knowledge, using tools and strategies to support you feeling more confident and empowered in your role as a parent or carer.

Over a "virtual cuppa" or an in person catch up, we will cover a different topic in a safe, non-judgemental space to discuss and explore your parenting style, how you communicate, how you set and keep boundaries, how you stay calm in challenging situations and how to model and implement self care for all the family.

The course comes with a free workbook each week, which offers take-away tips and exercises as well the core content of each topic for you to digest at your own pace. This builds into a handy guide after completion for easy reference, and also includes tools to chart your progress across the course. Once you have completed the course, Week 7 offers a "Check in" session to support you putting your new skills into practice within your family.

In addition we also provide a separate, online short course for your family members or partner who parent with you. This 3 module version of the course with resources, will help you to create a united and consistent parenting approach within your family, so that everyone is on the same page. This includes a joint “Check in” to cement your united family approach, on completion of the course.
